The Custom Process

Develop a Budget of what you feel comfortable spending on your new home. If you will be financing your new home through a lender, obtain a pre-qualification letter from one that supplies construction to permanent financing.

Select the location where you wish to live. Selecting the right site is one of the most important decisions in building a home. Shelter West has many excellent areas where we are currently building or we can help you find the property that is just right for you. If you already have your own building lot, we will be glad to build on it for you. Determine if the lot requires a septic field and/or well and the name of the utilities serving the area.

Develop plans and specifications for your new home. Shelter West has access to thousands of plans that can be customized to suit your needs. If you wish to design your own home we will help you select an architect and will work with you throughout the design process to keep things on track and within your budget.

Finalize the specifications and get it down on paper. Review all the specifications and plans so that both parties know exactly what the other is expecting. When the design process is complete, it is time to ratify the contract and arrange the loan settlement.

Construction Begins. Your construction superintendent will meet with you on a regular basis to keep you up to date on the progress of your new home and to go over selections and any changes that you may wish to make. We encourage you to visit the site, but due to safety considerations ask you to check in with the job site foreman and limit your extended visits to the scheduled walk throughs. When construction is complete, your superintendent will conduct a final walk through to familiarize you with its operation and make sure that everything meets our standards for quality and finish.
